We recently attended the MSU Turfgrass Conference on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, held January 5-7, 2016. The conference offered an intensive three day schedule on topics for audiences in the turf industry, including sessions for lawn, grounds and athletic fields, equipment technology and trends.

We appreciate for the opportunity for education and networking, and are proud that MSU offers a  world-reknowned turfgrass program. Examples of the program’s success include developing and installing playing surfaces for World Cup soccer and the Olympics. The program boasts over 1400 graduates from the program across the country.

Since 1957, MSU’s program has been supported by the Michigan Turfgrass Association, which allows several PhD level professors to conduct research to benefit the industry and ultimately, end-users.

The first day of the conference coincided with the annual meeting of the Michigan Golf Course Superintendent Association (MiGCSA). The MiGCSA exists to advance success of the golf course industry and provide education and advocacy for members.

Control Dynamics employees Skip Hall, Tim Miller and Terry Kerkstra represented us at the conference. Kerkstra, an industry veteran with over 20 years of experience, said a theme of the events was that end-users were “becoming more and more aware that energy savings are worth looking into, no matter how small, to be better stewards of their resources.” He also said the overall atmosphere was very positive and promising for the 2016 season and beyond.

Kerkstra reported that the overall atmosphere of the conference was positive. Many of the golf courses and municipalities were finally making plans to move forward with projects  and upgrades that had been on hold for years due to lack of funding.

Control Dynamics Inc. had a booth at the conference, and heard more than once about the importance of relationships in the industry. Decision-makers mentioned their appreciation for vendors like CDI who are trusted and proven partners..

Did you attend the conference? Do you have a turfgrass question we can answer? Please contact us with your feedback!
